A website usually consists of a minimum of five web pages. Your particular need may vary. Everyone has different needs from their website. Today, I would like to go over a step by step layout on how to get a website going. Next I will go into detail on each step by writing articles for each step.

#1 – Design
The very first thing you need to do is to think in your mind just exactly you want your website to do and what you want it to look like. Some typical sites include an about us page, a Contact Us Page, A welcome Page, and the additional pages to do the work you want done on your website. You might want to add a store, a photo album, forms for collecting data, etc…

#2 – Choose a Domain Name
Every server connected to the internet, has an internet IP address assigned to it. A domain name is like an address pointing to the server containing your website. SMDS.US points you to a folder on our web server (68.66.216.13). So instead of having to type in the IP address, followed by the folder information to get to a website, Domain Names come into play. Choose your domain name wisely, this is your address of sorts.

#3 – Find Hosting Provider
Unless you own a web server that is actively connected to the internet, you will need to find a way to get your site published in an area visible to the internet. This is called Hosting. A Hosting Provider owns web servers, and leases you a portion of the server for you to put your website. They will work with your Domain registration and get the domain pointing to your site.

#4 – Write Pages
Once you have your Domain name registered and pointing to your site’s physical location, you can start writing your site. If you have your site already written, simply FTP the site you have up to your Hosted directory. Your ISP may need to help you with this. If you are writing your own site, the coding part is very involved and gets more and more involved as the site gets larger.

#5 – Run SEO Tools
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a way of letting your search engines know about the pages you want the public to see (Or Not to see). SEO Tools control this and help promote your site

#6 – Maintenance
The maintenance on a website is very time consuming. Never have dead links, Always make sure your site is virus free, etc… SEO Maintenance is also important.

This week, I will get a detailed description of each step written.
